Shawls & Scarves
Tippet Scarf Pattern
An easy pattern, suitable for beginner knitters. A clever combination of knit and purl stitches creates what’s known as a faux-brioche (= “fake brioche”) stitch.A cleverly positioned opening in the scarf allows wearing it without having to add a chunky knot to keep it in place. 100 grams of DK, knitted on 4.5mm needles, creates a scarf similar in look and size as the one in the picture. This scarf can however be knitted in a large range of sizes of both yarn and needles.
Holey Moley Scarf(e)y
This is a quirky, double-sided pattern knitted in garter stitch. I gave it a wavy edge and knitted holes into it make it possible to knit a little scarf from a small hank of home-spun yarn that would stay on despite the fact that it’s short. It can, of course, be knitted to any length but the idea is that you can now make something cute out of an amount of yarn so small that you believed it would always remain in your stash, never enough to make something out of it and too nice to combine with anything else! As a guide, this was knitted using only 70 grams of aran weight yarn, on 6.5 mm needles.
Leafy Lace Shoulder Shawl
This sweet shoulder shawl is a perfect first lace project. It is knitted using 4-ply sock yarn, on 4.5 mm needles. The yarn in the picture is Fyberspates Sparkle Sock yarn, a lovely blend of Merino, Silk, Nylon and real silver. However, this shawl shines using most 4-ply yarns. It is the perfect canvas to show off the subtle colour variations of hand-dyed yarns and I recommend that Cashmere Sock yarn dyed in one or more of Helen Deighan’s All-in-One dyes. You’ll need 2 hanks of sock yarn for this shawl (one hank for the center panel and one for the border).
Experienced lace knitters may recognise that this pattern could be knitted using any yarn weight, as long as the needle size is changed to complement the yarn used. Since the center panel is knitted from the bottom back point up, it can be knitted to varying sizes as well by changing the number of repeats of the leaf pattern. The border is knitted on after the center panel has been finished.
